Nicolette Solomon

Executive Director and President
Suzuki String Specialist

Nicolette Solomon is Executive Director and  President of the Suzuki Institute of Dallas.

Ms. Solomon was born in Laingsburg, South Africa. She began her studies with Neil McKay in Port Elizabeth followed by Pierre de Groote at the College of Music in Cape Town. Nicolette completed her High School and University studies under the tutelage of Alan Solomon, who introduced her to the implementation of the Suzuki method. In 1975 she played at the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Scotland and later toured Europe and Israel. She has played in the International Festival Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, London and performed in Israel, Taiwan and Hong Kong with Harmonia Juventia. She performed Chamber Music from 1974 – 1981 with Betty Pack and Alan Solomon. She has also been an Adjudicator/Examiner for music competitions and examinations in South Africa.

Nicolette Solomon obtained a Bachelor of Music (Honors) and Higher Education Diploma (Post Graduate) at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her Suzuki training continued with Christophe Bossaut at the Ecole Suzuki in Lyon, France. Nicolette studied with Dr. Suzuki at the Talent Education Research Institute in Matsumoto, Japan in 1992. During that training, she taught at a private studio in Nagano City, Japan and at Shinshu University. Ms. Solomon founded and directed the Solomon Suzuki School in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In 1994, Ms. Solomon attended the International Strings workshop in France, playing in the Eduard Melckus Baroque Ensemble. She has taught at Suzuki workshops in South Africa, Dublin, Ireland, Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand. Ms. Solomon teaches at workshops and institutes throughout the USA.

Carl van Wyk

General Manager,

Music Theory Specialist, Composer

Carl van Wyk, born in Cape Town, South Africa, commenced undergraduate studies at the University of Cape Town. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1964 and completed his Master of Music degree in 1965. That same year he received a symphonic commission from the Cape Performing Arts Board. His work, Derivations won the composer’s competition of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in 1996. In the same year he was awarded the South African Music Rights Organization’s (SAMRO) Overseas Scholarship for Composers and spent 1 year studying with British composer Alan Bush at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During that time his orchestral work, Petrusa Variations, won both the Manson and West awards for composition

Van Wyk returned to South Africa and worked toward his Doctorate of Music degree. His studies in electronic music composition were accelerated by a practical course given by Dutch composer, Henk Badings. Badings was the co-examiner of van Wyk’s doctoral work, completed in 1971. After an initial appointment at the University of Port Elizabeth, Dr. van Wyk joined the staff of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1976 as Senior Lecturer in Music Theory. In 1991 he was appointed Head of the University’s School of Music, serving in this capacity through 1996.

Carl van Wyk has composed more than forty works. His Little Dance for the Piccaninny has been an examination piece in the international piano lists of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. His folk opera, Fiela’s Child, was premiered in September 1993 at the School of Music of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His African Suite for Children’s Orchestra has proved very popular with audiences and performers. Recently, van Wyk’s Three Paraphrase for Two String Quartets 1996, commissioned by SAMRO, was given its world premiere performance at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival in 1996. The work has enjoyed further performances at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. in January 2000.

He has subsequently been involved in arranging music for a variety of student-based ensembles. The works are designed for the enrichment of the Suzuki environment and includes several World Music offerings. Carl van Wyk has served as accompanist at a number of Suzuki workshops and presents computer-driven composition and theory classes at the Colorado Suzuki Workshop in Snowmass and other institutes.

Bret Serrin

Piano Specialist, Accompanist

                                                 
Bret Serrin is widely recognized as one of the United States' most brilliant young pianists.   Born in Virginia, Mr. Serrin started studying the piano at the age of six and gave his first public concert at the age of seven.   Mr. Serrin's talent soon attracted attention and while still a student, he won the prestigious Presser Music Scholarship, as well as numerous other awards.   During this time, he attended the Adamant International Summer Music Festival in Vermont, where he was invited to perform a live concert broadcast on United States' NPR (National Public Radio).

In 1997, Mr. Serrin pursued his graduate studies at the renowned University of North Texas, one of the two largest music schools in the United States.   He is currently completing doctoral studies in piano performance under the guidance of the eminent pedagogue Joseph Banowetz. He has also had extensive summer coaching sessions with the legendary American pianist, Earl Wild as one of his only private students. Wild described him as musician possessing a “rare pianistic ability”, one who is “totally dedicated to his art and….worthy of attention”.
             
Mr. Serrin is the recipient of gold medals in several international piano competitions. In 2000 alone, three first prizes and gold medals were awarded to him in the Los Angeles Liszt Competition , the Hubbard Solo and Chamber Music Competition (Dallas, Texas), and the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque Concerto Competition (New Mexico). Other highlights of his career include a silver medal at the 2002 National Society of Arts and Letters Competition in San Antonio and a prize in the Steinway Society's Career Grant Competition . Most recently, during the Hubedni Festival in the Czech Republic in 2002, he was awarded the silver medal in the prestigious Vysocina International Piano Competition .

His most recent concert schedule has included a guest artist appearance for the National Guild of Piano Technicians Annual Convention (Phoenix), the Basically Beethoven Festival (Dallas), the International Music Conference (Greensboro, North Carolina), performances with the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque, and radio broadcasts in California.  Mr. Serrin has studied the Suzuki method with Lorraine Gaal-Landefeld.

Liesl-Ann de Villiers

Suzuki String Specialist

Liesl-Ann de Villiers was born in New York but was raised in South-Africa.
She started the violin with Nicolette Solomon and completed her B.Mus. degree at the University of Pretoria where she studied viola with  Alan Solomon. Liesl-Ann was a member of the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra of South-Africa. After moving to the US in 1998, Liesl studied for her MMUS at the University of North Texas under Dr. Susan Dubois, where she became her teaching assistant. She was a member of the Graduate String Quartet, and Principal viola in the UNT Symphony Orchestra.

Liesl joined the Richardson Symphony as Assistant Principal Viola as well as the Lewisville Lake Symphony as Principal Viola. In 2001, Liesl was the Principal Viola for the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado, and performed as soloist. She has been a substitute and finalist for the New World Symphony, and recently became a substitute player for the Fort Worth Symphony.

Mrs. de Villiers was a member of the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa. In June of 2003 she was appointed to the Dallas Opera Orchestra.

Mrs. de Villiers has done her violin Suzuki teacher training with Elayne Ras, Paul Landefeld, Dr. Julia Hardie and Nancy Lokken. She is also a qualified "Music Together" teacher and plays in a professional string quartet with principal players of the Dallas Opera.

Debra Johnson


Suzuki Flute Specialist

Debra Johnson received her Bachelor of Music Degree in Flute Performance with Honors from Southern Methodist University (SMU). While at SMU, she played principal flute in the orchestra for three years. She continued her studies with a scholarship to the Ostlandets Music Conservatorium in Oslo, Norway and has completed the course work for a Masters degree at SMU. In addition she has studied with Torkil Bye, Jean Larson, Claire Johnson and Julius Baker.

Ms. Johnson has soloed with the Music Conservatorium Orchestra in Norway and at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention and the National Flute Association. She has also performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Ballet Orchestra and the Dallas Opera Orchestra. She was a one-time recipient of the Outstanding Player Award at Jean-Pierre Rampal Master Class and a three-time recipient of the Outstanding Player Award at Julius Baker Master Class. She is a member of the Liptonshire Chamber Players.

Donna Davis

Suzuki Cello Specialist
Chamber Music Specialist

Donna Davis has been teaching the Suzuki method for over 20 years. After taking her first Suzuki workshop while still an undergraduate,she began her teaching career in Connecticut working with Diana Tillson, one of the pioneers of the Suzuki method in America.   The founding cello teacher of the Bethwood Suzuki School in Woodbridge, CTshe taught for 3 years before moving to Erie, PA. Teaching at Mercyhurst College, Donna established the cello program and an extensive early childhood music program. Donna has been a certified Music Together teacher for over 10 years. A Texan for the last 10 years, she maintained a private studio in San Antonio before moving to Plano   5 years ago.   Conducting   and working with youth orchestras is one of her passions.   She currently conducts for the Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra and has conducted for the Young Artists Philharmonic, CT, Greater Erie Youth Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio.   Donna continues to freelance and play chamber music throughout the United States.   She is married to Jolyon, a cellist and has a 7 year old cellist son, Alexander.

Andrea Martinson

Suzuki String Specialist

Andrea Martinson graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Minnesota State University – Mankato. She was awarded a four year Mankato Symphony scholarship. She was also a concerto contest winner and an undergraduate teaching assistant. While at Mankato, Andrea studied with Marilyn Bos.

In 1998 Ms. Martinson received a Master of Music in Suzuki Pedagogy from East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina where she studied with Joanne Bath. She was also a graduate assistant for Ms. Bath during her Masters course. While pursuing her graduate studies at ECU she received a Suzuki Association of the Americas scholarship. Andrea was awarded a second Master of Music degree, in Violin Performance by the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, CT. While at the Hartt School of Music she studied with Linda Fiore and Brian Lewis. She also participated in Master Classes with members of the Emerson Quartet. Ms.Martinson has taken Suzuki coursework from Marilyn O’Boyle, Nancy Lokken, Craig Timmerman Alice Joy Lewis and Tom Wermuth. She has taken viola coursework from Betsy Stuen-Walker.

Ms. Martinson has maintained private violin and viola studios in Mankato Minnesota, Greenville (NC), and Hartford (CT). She has taught at the New Ulm Minnesota Suzuki School of Music in Mankato and the Hartt School of Music Community Division. Shehas performed with the Mankato Symphony for eight years, the St. Cloud Symphony and the Tar River (NC) Symphony.

       Phoebe Hemingwayushman

Suzuki Piano Specialist

Phoebe Bushman is a graduate of Northern Arizona University where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and her Bachelor of Arts in German, both with Honors. Phoebe has done her Suzuki training with Diana Galindo.

A student of Dr. Frank Scott, she has been involved in various recitals, both as soloist and collaborative pianist.   Spending a year in Germany, she carried on her music studies with the Japanese teacher Sacchi Nagaki.   She has attended the Brevard Summer Music Program, during which she studied privately with Dr. Douglas Weeks, and attended performances and master classes given by such renowned artists as Jon Nakamatsu, Henry Preucill, the Miami quartet and the Diaz Trio.   Phoebe has taught students of various ages for the last 5 years, using both Suzuki and Traditional methods.

Kristin Gram

Suzuki Harp & Piano Specialist

 Kristin Gram began studying harp under Delaine Fedson at the age of six, utilizing the Suzuki method.   She showed great promise as a young harpist, placing first in the Intermediate II Division of the American Harp Society National Competition in 1997.  

              Kristin attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, and studied under Susan Dedrich Pejovich.   While at SMU, she served as principal harpist for the Meadows Symphony Orchestra for three years.   She graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music, receiving the Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Music.  

              Kristin continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin, again studying under Delaine Fedson.   She has served as the principal harp for the University of Texas Symphony for the past two years.   She will graduate in December 2006 with a Masters in Music.

              Besides performance, Kristin has a tremendous passion for teaching.   She has studied the Suzuki method under Mary Kay Waddington and Delaine Fedson.   Gram has acquired varied teaching experience, most recently serving on the faculty of the UT String Project/Harp Project for the past two years.

Vadim Timinsky

Suzuki Classical Guitar Specialist
Mr. Timinsky began studying guitar (click to view Mr. Timinsky's guitar page) at the age of ten with private teachers. He continued his studies at the Georg Ots Tallinn Music High School with the noted Estonian guitarist Tiit Peterson.

After studying in his native Estonia, he completed his education at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance with Professor Joseph Urshalmi, where he received a BA in Music. Later, Vadim attended several master classes given by Aniello Desiderio (Italy), Costas Cociolis (Greece), Thomas Muller-Pering (Germany), Zoran Dukic (Chorvatia), Vladimir Mikulka (Chechoslavakia).  In 2005 Mr. Timinsky  completed his Master of Music in Classic Guitar Performance at SMU under professor Robert Guthrie. Mr. Timinsky has done Suzuki Teacher training with Andrea Cannon.

He started giving recitals while still a student. He has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician at various guitar festivals in Estonia, Finland, Israel, Greece, and Germany.  Mr. Timinsky is a professional member of the Dallas Classic Guitar Society. He frequently performs as a soloist as well as an ensemble member at Dallas area.

Mr. Timinsky is an excellent guitar teacher. He has given numerous master classes in several countries. His teaching method and approach to the development of classical guitar technique are the result of years of experience as a classical guitar teacher at different music institutions in Europe and USA.

One of the important conclusions he reached from his years of teaching is that the most desirable time to start development of a correctly relaxed technique is in the early stages of study.

Jolyon Pegis

Cello Specialist

Jolyon Pegis was born in Rochester, NY. He attended Indiana University and the University of Hartford studying with Gary Hoffman and David Wells. Mr. Pegis is a winner of the Artists International Awards in New York City.

 

Jolyon has appeared as soloist with the Kingsport, Chautauqua, San Antonio, Virgir1ia, Maui, and Dallas Symphony orchestras. He made his official New York Recital Debut at Weill Recital Hall in 1990 and has also been a regular performer on the Federal Hall Concert Series, Saint Paul Festival of the Arts, and at Carni Hall. As a performer of new music, Mr. Pegis has commissioned and premiered several works and has worked with such composers as Gunther Schuller, Lukas Foss, and Don Froind. He is an advocate of the music of the late Eric Heckard and has premiered a number of his works including his Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra.

 

Mr. Pegis has served on the faculties of Atlantic Union College, the Hartt School of Music, and the D'Angelo School of Music at Mercyhurst College. He was a member of the Arcadia Trio in conjunction with being a resident artist at the Yellow Barn Music Festival. From 1993-1995 he was the Music Director of the Jamestown Youth Orchestra. Since 1993 he has served as Assistant Principal Cellist of the Chautauqua Symphony and in 1995 joined the San Antonio Symphony as Principal Cello. He was a resident artist at both the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival in Buffalo and the Anchorage Festival of the Arts. He is currently a member of the Dallas Symphony as well as being a member of the contemporary ensemble "Voices of Change" and an adjunct faculty member of SMU.

Rigo Murillo

Suzuki String Specialist

Mr Murillo received honor degrees in violin performance and music education from the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was granted the McGraw Violin Chair Award. He also holds an Artist Diploma in violin performance from the Ollin Yoliztli Institute in Mexico City, where he studied with Sergei Gorbenko, the former concertmaster of the USSR Radio and TV Orchestra. Other teachers and artists from whom Rigo has received valuable influences include Ivo Valenti, Stephen Redfield, and Luis Ortega. In addition, he has performed in master classes with world-renowned violinists such as Mayumi Fuzikawa Gregory Feigin, and Alexandre Brussilovsky. Rigo has served as concertmaster of the USM and Mesquite Symphony orchestras, and has been a member of the Pensacola Symphony Meridian Symphony and Mississippi Opera orchestras.

 

Throughout his career, he has shared stage along with world-acclaimed artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Jean Pierre Rampal, Doc Severinsen, and Ray Charles, among others.

Mr. Murillo is an active teacher member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the North Texas Suzuki Association, having studied Suzuki pedagogy with Michelle George, Joanne Melvin, Pat D'Ercole, and Paul Landefeld. He has taught in numerous clinics and workshops as well as serving as faculty member of the University of Southern Mississippi Suzuki School, Violinspire Suzuki Workshop in Hattiesburg, MS, and the American Honor Orchestra Festival.

 

Rigo's musical leadership has taken him to excel as music director and conductor of the USM Civic Orchestra, Director of Operations of the USM Symphony Orchestra, and music director at Mount Sinai Congregation in Mexico City. He is also the founder of the Suzuki Strings program in the Greenville (TX) public schools.

Margaret Hubing

Margaret Hubing is a graduate of Valparaiso University in northwest Indiana, where she earned a bachelor of music in violin performance and a business minor. She was a winner of the VU Concerto Competition and concert mistress of the VU Symphony Orchestra for three years. She started Suzuki violin at the age of three while growing up near Chicago. Margaret moved to Dallas in September of 2006 and is pursuing a career in arts administration. She is pleased to be back in the Suzuki music environment working for the Suzuki Institute of Dallas.
